PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — The family of a Saskatchewan couple and their grandson, who were slain in their home nearly seven weeks ago, say the surviving granddaughter is doing well in hospital.
In a statement released by Prince Albert police, relatives say the five-year-old girl has had eight surgeries and her condition continues to improve.
The release says she has been nicknamed “One Tough Cookie.”
Nathaniel Kenneth Carrier is facing three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents, Denis Carrier and Sandra Henry, both 56, and of his seven-year-old son, Bentlee.
He is also charged with the attempted murder of his daughter, Kendrah.
Police said they were called to the home on March 29 after friends and relatives went to check on the family.
Officers discovered the three bodies and the girl was transported in critical condition to an Edmonton hospital.
Her mother, identified in the statement as Heather, said she’s encouraged to see the girl’s condition improving.
“She’s done so well,” she said. “The whole family is excited for her to come home. We are amazed at how strong and determined she is.”
Nathaniel Carrier is next scheduled to appear in court in Prince Albert on June 4.
