A wildfire burning in the Fort a la Corne forest east of Prince Albert has forced a small evacuation from the community of James Smith Cree Nation.
Eight people considered priority one members were taken to a Prince Albert hotel as a precaution as smoke moved into the community, the province said in an email.
Emergency Social Services staff are working with the community and the Canadian Red Cross to coordinate food and accommodations for evacuees.
Health and safety regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic mean people will be served meals in their rooms and support will be provided at the hotel.
Strong wind pushed the blaze, which started May 8, passed the fireguard on Thursday.
It has since doubled in size to approximately 5,300 hectares, according to the province’s public safety agency.
