The NFL is at it again, plucking rules from other leagues to make its game potentially better.
The No. 1 football league in the world has been doing this very well for a long time. Some of the video and television work by the first XFL became NFL norms not too long after.
Now the NFL is looking at using the Alliance of American Football’s onside kick rule of a fourth down play to keep the ball after a score. Teams would need to gain 15 yards on an offensive play.
NFL officials are also looking at the off-field official to help make calls that we’ve seen a bit in the CFL, XFL and AAF recently.
This is all a good practice for the NFL. Why wouldn’t you try to take great ideas?
A rule it tried and will turf is the pass interference challenge. The NFL hated it after Year 1, so it doesn’t always get it right.
But if you’re asking me what rule the NFL should pluck from the XFL is the point after. No kicks and potential nine-point plays? I thought it was a brilliant new twist on the point after that if the NFL doesn’t want to use, I think the CFL should.
