A 21-year-old Regina man is facing weapons charges after he was arrested Saturday night carrying what police described as a semi-automatic rifle.
According to the Regina Police Service, officers responded to a call of an assault in the 2000 block of Wallace Street at about 10:45 p.m. While en route, they saw a man matching the suspect’s description on 15th Avenue, just a few blocks from where the assault allegedly occurred.
When officers told the man to put up his hands, they saw a gun tucked into the waistband of his pants. The gun turned out to be a semi-automatic rifle.
A search of the man also found a quantity of drugs.
“Further investigation did not reveal evidence sufficient to charge the male in connection with the assault, but he is facing weapons and drug charges,” the police said in a media release.
The man is facing five weapons-related charges, one of possession of a scheduled substance and one of failing to comply with a release order.
He made his first court appearance Monday.
