Downed trees and collapsed gazebos made this windy weekend memorable for people in Regina’s Lakewood neighbourhood.
High winds were an inconvenience for many people throughout the province this weekend.
Plants, tools, toys, decorations and more were tossed about by winds up to 80 kilometres per hour at some times on Saturday.
On Monday morning, pickup trucks and city cleanup crews could be seen gathering branches and fallen leaves. Basketball and hockey nets lay askew on numerous driveways, evidence of Saskatchewan’s gusty weekend.
One resident in the Lakewood area said a tree in her next door neighbour’s front lawn went down over the weekend.
“We thought it was the crack of lightning,” the resident said.
One of the tree’s branches was splintered after the wind broke it from its trunk. The resident said a creaking sound can be heard coming from the downed branch with every bit of breeze.
In another part of the neighbourhood, a different resident said the windy weather is resulting in routine cleanup efforts by herself and her neighbours.
The resident, who lives in a bay leading to a green space with several large trees, said the wind often leaves a significant amount of debris behind.
Whenever the wind picks up, residents in her bay will walk over to the green space and gather branches and other debris and pile it along the curb to be picked up by city cleanup crews. This weekend was no exception, the resident said.
Fallen shingles and collapsed gazebos were other casualties of the weekend’s gale-like winds.
