SGI is ready to hit the gas when it comes to road tests.
The Crown corporation announced Thursday it was reopening road tests to the general public effective immediately. All drivers who are required to take a road test for any class of driver’s licence or motorcycle now can book an appointment.
SGI stopped driver’s tests in March due to COVID-19 restrictions before offering them on a limited basis in April, with priority given to those who worked in the health-care or agriculture sectors. Those tests were done with enhanced safety protocols due to the pandemic.
Now, everyone can book an appointment.
“We are grateful for the patience of the thousands of learner drivers who have been unable to book road tests since mid-March,” Penny McCune, the chief operating officer of the Auto Fund, said in a media release.
“Saskatchewan was the first province to resume offering road tests of any kind and we are the first to reopen testing completely across all classes. We will continue to explore ways to increase our testing capacity, with a priority on keeping our customers and employees safe and not contributing to the spread of COVID-19.”
SGI reminded drivers who want to book an appointment that its testing capacity is limited due to the COVID-19 safety measures that remain in place. As a result of that — and because of the backlog of tests that were cancelled starting in March — SGI is urging patience because it expects to have a long waiting list.
Additional staff has been hired in an effort to handle the demand. Testing is available at two locations in each of Regina and Saskatoon, as well as in Prince Albert, Swift Current, North Battleford, Yorkton, Meadow Lake, Humboldt, Weyburn, Kindersley, Lloydminster, Tisdale, Estevan and Moose Jaw.
