WestJet has laid off 121 employees in Saskatchewan as the airline deals with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The airline announced on Wednesday that 3,333 employees would be laid off across the country. That includes 60 in Regina and 61 in Saskatoon.
The company stated the layoffs are organizational and will not affect operations or scheduling at the airports in Saskatchewan.
The company is in the process of contracting out airport services at all hubs except for Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Edmonton. However, WestJet did indicate it will reduce mobility assistance at those four airports and aircraft turnaround service including baggage in Calgary and Toronto.
The airline said the hope is to offer as many as 2,300 of the laid-off employees preferential hiring interviews affected by this change. The process is expected to take place over the next year.
