Workers at the Co-op refinery in Regina are just getting ready to head back on the job, but now the company is issuing layoff notices.
About 100 people are being serviced with temporary notices, according to Co-op. It said the layoffs are due to a market downturn and COVID-19 restrictions.
“We recognize this is a difficult situation. We value the employees that this will impact and do everything we can to get them back to work as soon as we are able,” said director of public affairs for the company, Brad DeLorey in an email.
The company said it informed the workers’ union in April that layoffs would be forthcoming. It said the layoffs could last as long as the province’s emergency declaration, plus two weeks — in accordance with public emergency layoff rules.
