Two men from Brampton, Ont., are facing drug trafficking charges after the RCMP seized 50 kilograms of cocaine during a traffic stop near Davidson.
The Mounties say it’s one of the largest cocaine seizures in the province’s history.
On Friday at around 1:30 p.m., an officer from the Craik RCMP detachment stopped a vehicle for speeding on Highway 11 near the town.
In a video attached to a media release, Chief Supt. Alfredo Bangloy said the two men in the vehicle said they were travelling to Alberta for personal business.
“During the course of the vehicle stop, a simple traffic stop turned into a drug trafficking and possession investigation due to several factors that will be presented as part of the court process,” Bangloy said in the video.
He said when the officer searched the vehicle, he found $3,600 in cash and 50 one-kilogram bricks of cocaine split into two duffel bags.
“This was one of the largest cocaine seizures in all of Saskatchewan that we are aware of,” said Bangloy.
Officers from the Federal Serious and Organized Crime Team South assisted the Craik RCMP with the investigation.
A 24-year-old man was arrested and charged with trafficking cocaine. A 30-year-old man was arrested and charged with trafficking cocaine and possession of the proceeds of crime.
“We continue to focus on high-visibility patrols and traffic stops across the province, both to help prevent illicit drugs from reaching our communities and to stop unsafe driving behaviours,” Bangloy said.
“While we are thankful to get the 50 kilograms of cocaine off the street, the true success of this investigation is the complete disruption of this interprovincial drug trafficking operation and preventing any potential acts of violence, property crime and addiction that is always a price to pay in the drug trade.”
The men appeared in court in Moose Jaw on Tuesday and were released on strict conditions. They’re scheduled to return to court July 27 in Moose Jaw.
The investigation is ongoing.
