The City of Regina said Friday vanadium — a metal used by the Co-op Refinery Complex during its routine maintenance process — was in samples of the city’s wastewater in late June.
In a media release, the city said it had received Wednesday preliminary test results from a June 28 sample of the Wastewater Treatment Plant’s final effluent. The sample contained a level of vanadium that the city said “was above provincial reportable standards.”
The city immediately notified the Water Security Agency.
“The City has been working with the Co-op Refinery Complex and they have been hauling the metal-concentrated wastewater offsite to a specialized treatment facility,” the city’s release said.
The results of more tests received Friday said there now is low risk to Wascana Creek. Also Friday, downstream users were told no further action was required.
The city said that, as of Monday, the Wastewater Treatment Plant’s final effluent levels were below provincial reporting standards.
Regina also had to deal with an oil spill from the refinery in late May.
