The Regina Police Service is to receive nearly $6 million in government funding for 45 positions during the 2020-21 fiscal year.
The Ministry of Corrections and Policing is providing the service with $4.95 million for 40 positions through the Municipal Police Grants program. That’s an increase of $90,000 from last year.
“This funding reinforces our government’s commitment to ensuring communities are safe and police are supported,” Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell said in a media release.
Some of that money is earmarked for the renewal of the RPS’s Police and Crisis Team. That unit comprises police officers and mental health workers who offer assistance to persons experiencing mental health crises in the community.
Other funds are to go to the Integrated Crime Reduction teams (which gathers intelligence on street gangs and gang associates) and the Internet Child Exploitation program (which is dedicated to the investigation of child exploitation).
SGI is providing the RPS with a further $900,000 for five positions with the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan initiative.
“The Province of Saskatchewan’s municipal police grant is a welcome ongoing commitment toward community safety,” Regina Police Chief Evan Bray said in the release.
“This investment ensures the continued focus on numerous crime pressures and complements our vision of working together to keep Regina safe.”
