Those searching for a summer getaway can always fall back on the great outdoors.
Former Saskatchewanderer Ashlyn George suggests the Boreal Trail in Meadow Lake Provincial Park.
She recently traversed the 135-kilometre route, finishing one of the longest in the province for the second time in her life in six days.
“The great thing about the trail is you don’t actually have to do the whole 135 kilometres. If you want to split it up into different chunks, you totally can,” George told the Greg Morgan Morning Show.
George said the trail doesn’t feature a huge typography change. It features a few hills and hikers might need to re-route if rain has created wet, muddy conditions.
She suggests doing a bit of training before starting, making sure you can carry your own pack and walk long distances.
Hikers should be prepared for wildlife so preparations include bringing bear spray and making lots of noise along the route. For those who intend to stay overnight, they should pack food and a water filter.
“Make sure you’re carrying lightweight gear so you’re not hauling a huge, heavy pack around while you’re tackling the trail,” George said.
Coming prepared will mean getting to enjoy stunning views.
“It was incredible. Every single day on the trail, we saw dozens of them. For the most part, you’re hiking through the forest so you’re heading through poplar and evergreens, then you come out at these amazing viewpoints of the lake,” George said.
“There’s 25 lakes in the park so you’re constantly winding from lake to river to creek to lake and it really is incredible.”
She re-emphasizes that there’s no need to hike all 135 km at once, that splitting the trail into more manageable sections gives you a reason to come back at a later date.
