A former general manager of the Clearwater River Dene First Nation is facing a fraud charge after the community was defrauded of more than $1 million.
Jonny Cheecham, a 61-year-old resident of La Loche, has been charged with fraud over $5,000 under the Criminal Code of Canada.
The investigation started six years ago.
In July of 2014, the RCMP received a report of fraudulent activity committed by the general manager of the Clearwater River Dene First Nation between 2008 and 2011.
The Prince Albert RCMP General Investigation Section and the La Loche RCMP detachment conducted an investigation, which included interviews and a forensic audit. The audit revealed more than $1 million in losses had been suffered by the Clearwater Dene First Nation.
Cheecham is scheduled to make his first appearance in provincial court in La Loche on Sept. 21.
