Environment Canada says smoke from wildfires burning in the U.S. pacific northwest region is arriving in the prairies this weekend.
The hazy conditions started Saturday morning.
“The weather pattern is pushing some of that smoke throughout Saskatchewan and throughout the whole prairies,” meteorologist David Baggaley said. “Most of that is well aloft well higher up in the atmosphere, so that will be producing hazy conditions.”
Air quality statements were issued in the Assiniboia, Leader, Moose Jaw, Shaunavon and Swift Current areas around 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
“It will be affecting the southwestern portion of Saskatchewan first,” he Baggaley explained. “It’s not bad now (Saturday morning) but it will be getting worse tonight.”
Environment Canada issued special air quality statements for most of British Columbia this week because of the smoke.
For people with breathing issues or sensitivities, Baggaley expects Sunday will be when they notice conditions change.
