There won’t be any interschool sports competition between Regina’s high schools this fall.
The Regina High Schools Athletic Association issued a release Thursday saying the school divisions have decided that: “Intercollegiate/interschool competition in cross-country, football, soccer or volleyball will not be allowed during the 2020 fall season.”
All RHSAA schools will have the option within their own schools to run extracurricular activities, practices or intramural sports as long as there is an agreement in place from administration, athletic directors, coaches and student-athletes.
Any participation will also need to follow the mini-league guidelines put out by the province.
The association said numerous options regarding the return to fall sports, taking into account the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s COVID-19 guidelines as well as student and staff safety.
Cross-country, football and soccer practices and in-school competition can begin on Monday. Volleyball can begin on Oct. 13.
While golf was originally cancelled, the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association said last week it will run a short season without a provincial championship. That season will run from Monday to Oct. 17.
The association also said that due to the unpredictability of COVID-19, any of the directions can be changed on short notice.
A decision on the RHSAA’s winter sports — badminton, basketball, curling, hockey, track and field, and wrestling — will be made at a later date.
The RHSAA represents the Regina Catholic School Division, Regina Public Schools, Luther College, Huda School, Ecole Laval, Regina Christian School and Harvest City Christian Academy.
