A 29-year-old man has been handed a prison sentence of just under six years for stabbing a Regina Police Service officer during an incident in November.
Jordan Stirling pleaded guilty in late August to a charge of aggravated assault on a peace officer. Stirling initially was facing a charge of attempted murder in connection with the stabbing of Cpl. Justin Duck.
The incident happened Nov. 3 at about 3:45 p.m., when officers located a stolen vehicle in the Cornwall Centre parkade.
As police moved in on the vehicle, two people approached it. One of them took off after seeing the police, but the other got into the vehicle.
At that point, Duck confronted the suspect who was in the vehicle and a struggle broke out. The day after the incident, RPS Chief Evan Bray said the suspect had stabbed Duck multiple times, with one of the blows just missing an artery in one of the officer’s legs.
As Duck backed off due to his injuries, Stirling started to run, but officers used a Taser to stop him. He subsequently was charged with a variety of offences, including attempted murder.
