As political leaders in Saskatchewan believe they are doing everything to stop the spread of COVID-19, down south the virus has made a mark on the President’s campaign.
President Donald Trump tested positive in the midst of his election campaign.
Both Ryan Meili, leader of the Saskatchewan NDP, and Scott Moe, leader of the Saskatchewan Party, gave their reactions Friday.
Moe believes campaigning within the province has much less risk than travelling across the United States like President Trump has been doing.
“We’re in a truck, not in a plane. We’re staying in one province, not travelling across the nation. We’re not holding large rallies. We’re limiting the number of people at each of our events, and we are physically distancing … In Saskatchewan, there are, quite simply, a lot fewer active cases today than just about anywhere throughout the U.S.,” Moe said.
But he still thinks it’s best to be careful.
“We are being cautious and we are doing everything to protect ourselves, our families and everyone around us,” Moe continued.
It’s rare that Meili and Moe are on the same page, but the NDP leader has similar feelings.
“(The news about Trump) does remind us that (COVID) is something to take seriously as we’re trying to do a campaign … We’re not having large rallies, people are coming to events in masks, we’re being as safe as possible,” Meili said. “We’re very hopeful that we will not see any COVID-19 connected to the campaign.
“Thank goodness we didn’t do a campaign when Moe wanted us to, back in the spring, when we were first learning about this, when we didn’t know about masks, when we didn’t understand what a disaster that would have been.”
