Men’s curling in Saskatchewan is coming back and in a big way.
A five-team, round-robin event will begin on Oct. 16, hosted by the Highland Curling Club in Regina. The inaugural ‘Saskatchewan Men’s Super Series’ will only include rinks from within the province.
The defending Tim Hortons Brier bronze medallist, Matt Dunstone, will headline the five-team field. Teams skipped by Colton Flasch, Kody Hartung, Rylan Kleiter and Shawn Meachem round out the field.
The Dunstone rink was part of the creation of the bonspiel, which is presented by Vaderstad and Calidon Leasing.
“To say it’s been a long wait would be an understatement. We’re no different than every other team just itching to get back out on the ice to compete,” Dunstone said in a Monday release.
“We went to work and sought out a small group of Saskatchewan teams to give us the taste and feel of high-level competition that we need to prepare and ultimately help us accomplish our goals this season, as well as stay safe as we return to play.”
All teams will follow the CurlSask “Return to Curling Guidelines” that were announced Aug. 27.
The top three teams will qualify for the playoffs, with the top team advancing straight to the Oct. 18 final.
The two teams in the 2-3 spots after the round robin will play for a spot in Sunday’s final.
Streaming details will be announced in the near future, once they are finalized.
