Hockey without contact?
Is that even hockey?
Well, yes it is. Let’s remember the only objective of the sport is to score. Hits don’t count on the scoreboard. I’ve also been told fights don’t count as a goal either.
The Ontario government is telling the Ontario Hockey League that a return-to-play strategy has to include rule changes that eliminate fighting and intentional body contact for the 2020-21 season.
Could you imagine asking 16- to 20-year-olds to not hit someone when going into the corner to get the puck?
It’s a test to see how serious the OHL wants to play.
But a part of me wants to see it. As concussions become more of a concern for growing teens, you wonder if there is a safer way to play without the rock ’em sock ’em mentality Don Cherry is such a fan of.
The women’s game is still high quality without the open-ice hits so why wouldn’t the junior game still have quality without the contact?
Let’s give it a shot. We might be pleasantly surprised.
