Athletes’ jersey numbers can hold a special place in their hearts.
Now the Regina Food Bank is hoping that number can inspire people to donate.
Former members of the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders and other athletes in Regina are taking part in the #DonateYourNumber social media campaign, in which the athletes are donating the same amount as the number on their jerseys.
The Regina Food Bank said the timing of this is critical as food insecurity is up more than 100 per cent from this time last year.
Former Roughrider and three-time Grey Cup-champion Paul Woldu is helping lead the charge. Three other former Roughriders — running back Neal Hughes, wide receiver Dan Farthing and receiver Chris Getzlaf — also have joined the campaign.
They are encouraging athletes of all ages and their families to make the donation and post photos of themselves in their jerseys, encouraging others to do the same.
