It has become one of the most passionate debates in sports, right up there with Bobby Orr or Wayne Gretzky, or whether Paul Henderson be in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
The debate is LeBron James or Michael Jordan as the greatest basketball player ever.
The debate is really heating up now that LeBron has won four titles and closes in on Michael’s six.
The one problem is any talk of Michael Jordan is becoming more and more nostalgic. As we get further away from Michael Jordan, we think more and more of him.
I’m actually really starting to understand those who claim Bobby Orr is better than Wayne Gretzky. Orr is nostalgic. He’s a taste of their childhood and Wayne threatens that.
And the debate for LeBron and MJ is split on age. Trust me, I debated two 20-somethings about this, two who never watched MJ play in their lives, who think LeBron is better.
Of course, we all know they’re wrong. Why? Because no one will ever admit their childhood sports idol is lesser than anybody, ever.
And it’s why anyone alive in the 1970s thinks Paul should be in the Hall, even though they’re wrong.
