I’m looking around at the sports TV schedule right now and see a giant hole — and I shake my head at an opportunity lost for the CFL.
The World Series could be done by the weekend. The Stanley Cup has been handed out and the NHL season won’t start until January. The NBA is off for a few more months.
So it’s the NFL and … that’s it for the pros.
And it continues to burn me that the CFL, which announced the cancellation of the season two months ago, didn’t see an opportunity to grow engagement right now.
The CFL whiffed. The losses it would have taken now could have been an investment into the future.
The CFL would have had no competition for Friday and Saturday among professional leagues.
The opening message was, “We need a handout and then we’ll play.” The message should have been, “We’re playing. Now how do we make that happen, and is there financial help?”
Instead, the NFL will continue to chew into the audience and who knows who comes back to watch the CFL in 2021?
