Two traffic stops on Highway 7 west of Kindersley resulted in a pair of drug busts and the seizures of more than 45 kilograms of cannabis and nearly a kilogram of cocaine.
In a media release Thursday, the RCMP said a pickup truck was stopped Tuesday at around 2:30 p.m., for a check of the driver’s licence and the vehicle’s registration.
According to the Mounties, the officer “made several observations which resulted in the lone male occupant being detained for a drug investigation.”
A search of the truck found five garbage bags containing about 45 kilograms (99 pounds) of cannabis.
A 34-year-old Saskatoon man was charged with possession of cannabis for the purpose of distribution.
He appeared before a justice of the peace and was released on conditions. His next appearance in Kindersley Provincial Court is set for Dec. 15.
Then on Wednesday at around 3:30 p.m., an RCMP officer stopped a car on the same highway for speeding.
The officer again saw something that resulted in the launch of a drug investigation.
After a police service dog detected narcotic odours inside the car, the driver was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.
A search of the car found 850 grams of cocaine and more than three kilograms (seven pounds) of cannabis.
A 33-year-old man from Strathmore, Alta., was charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of cannabis for the purpose of distribution.
After being released on conditions, he too is scheduled to make his first court appearance Dec. 15 in Kindersley.
Police seized both vehicles.
