The Canadian Football League lost two greats on Monday.
One had billions of dollars and the other didn’t have billions but was just as much a champion for his team and his city.
B.C. Lions owner David Braley was the saviour of the league at multiple times. He brought other owners into the league like Bob Young of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and took over the Toronto Argonauts to keep them afloat until Bell and Larry Tannenbaum stepped forward.
Braley was a true champion.
And sad news also came from Edmonton on Monday. Joey Moss, the equipment and locker room assistant for the Edmonton football team and the Edmonton Oilers, passed away.
You’ll know Joey as the man passionately singing O Canada. Born with Down Syndrome, Moss was brought to the Oilers by Wayne Gretzky as a teenager to help out. Wayne got him a summer job with the football team too.
Joey never left. He loved Edmonton. He loved the Eskimos. He loved the Oilers. And Edmonton loved him back.
Yes, teams need owners, but they also need people like Joey Moss.
Both men will be dearly missed.
