A 27-year-old Regina man is facing numerous charges — including one of attempted murder of a police officer — in the wake of his arrest Oct. 23 in the city.
According to the Regina Police Service, the man is facing charges that date back to Sept. 15.
On Oct. 23, Regina police got a call from the RCMP about an armed robbery that had occurred east of the city. The suspect reportedly had a gun and had stolen a vehicle.
Officers subsequently saw the car in the Al Ritchie neighbourhood at around 9 p.m., at which time the suspect allegedly fired a gun at an officer in an unmarked police vehicle while both vehicles were moving.
The officer wasn’t injured.
Police eventually laid down a spike belt to stop the vehicle, which finally came to a halt near the intersection of Broad Street and Victoria Avenue.
Officers tried to remove the man from the vehicle and, during the struggle, an officer used a Taser on the suspect. It wasn’t effective, but officers managed to subdue the man. He was arrested on outstanding warrants.
The man was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries he suffered during the arrest. Police said he spent much of the week in hospital “for a health matter unrelated to his contact with police.”
He was remanded into custody on Friday and then arrested again Tuesday on a lengthy list of charges.
Aside from the count of attempted murder, he also faces charges for uttering counterfeit money, robbery, vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle under $5,000, and possession of a prohibited weapon and ammunition.
He also faces a number of charges for breaching a release order.
Regina police say the RCMP also has charged the man in connection with the Oct. 23 robbery.
