Regina mayoral candidate Tony Fiacco called out other candidates ahead of Monday’s election, urging voters to take into consideration fiscal responsibility when they are at the polls.
Fiacco claims the city is in no position to be building large infrastructure projects.
“Some candidates are committing you, the taxpayer, to building projects estimated at tens of millions of dollars,” Fiacco said. “Meanwhile, they are hoping for the cash-strapped federal and provincial governments to give us money, money that has not been committed and may not exist.
“I’m not saying we wouldn’t like a new stadium or new aquatic facilities. I’d love for those rail lines to be moved, but we know better.”
Sandra Masters has previously talked about building a new aquatic centre, Jerry Flegel has spoken about building a new arena and Michael Fougere has a plan to move the rail lines that cross Ring Road.
Fiacco stressed the importance of working on current infrastructure projects throughout the city instead of focusing on new ones for the time being.
“Eventually we need newer facilities but right now it’s more important that we take care (of) economic development downtown (and) infill housing in the two neighbourhoods of Heritage and North Central,” Fiacco said. “We also need to take care of crime and policing policies in the city.”
