No cliches, no dodging the issue, just the straight goods from Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet.
He joined fellow NBA player J.J. Reddick’s podcast and said it straight about free agency: He’s looking to get paid.
He offered none of the promises you always get from players that they’d love to stay and want to win in their current city.
I get those all the time on garbage bag day from free agents in the CFL.
Instead, VanVleet wants to maximize on what he believes to be a budding NBA career. He has helped the Raptors win a championship. He has developed from an undrafted player to a 35-minute-a-night player. He averaged 40 minutes in the most-recent playoffs and a fraction under 20 points per game.
I always want the straight goods from athletes and appreciate when they’re willing to risk ticking off their fan base to say what we all know when they hit free agency.
They want to get paid!
It’s actually disappointing that comments like these surprise us because we get so used to being fed cliche after cliche.
