The Hall of Fame ballots for Cooperstown have been sent out.
As always, the debate rages over whether Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens deserve inclusion with the dark cloud of steroid use over them.
That brings us to yesterday’s news. Robinson Cano has tested positive for a second time in three years for steroids. He has been hit with a year-long suspension and loses his $24 million for this year’s salary.
Cano is a borderline Hall of Famer. He’s an eight-time all-star and a five-time Silver Slugger winner and he finished in the top 10 in MVP voting six times.
All of his greatness came before the steroid tests came back positive. The testing regimen is 1,000 per cent more stringent than it was in the Bonds and Clemens days.
The odds Cano was getting away with it throughout his career are slim.
You can’t say the same for Clemens and Bonds, who were never proven cheaters.
I just hope Cano gets treated with the same forgiveness it appears voters have had for Clemens and Bonds, as there should be less skepticism around Cano’s success than the other two.
