Some new and old faces are preparing to be sworn into Regina city council.
The municipal election results were announced on Nov. 9. Six new members of city council will be sworn in for the first time Monday.
Daniel LeBlanc of Ward 6 says the orientation that has taken place has gone flawlessly.
“The city administration staff has been responsible for the orientation of some of us new councillors, and they’ve been amazingly good at breaking it into bite-sized pieces for us,” LeBlanc said. “I’ve been very impressed with the city’s ability to prepare us new councillors and provide support for the returning councillors.”
Orientation training started last Sunday and wrapped up on Friday. Administration has explained how the city operates at a high level, decisions councillors have made in the past and what the direction of city administration has looked like in recent years.
It’s also allowed the council to get to know each other, as well as how each member stands on certain issues.
“There has been some discussion of what each of our priorities are, and I think we’ve had some good time to network with each other in between orientation sessions,” LeBlanc said. “I’m excited to get to work and I’m honoured to have people put the trust in me.
“It feels like a lot of responsibility but also very exciting. I’m looking forward to it.”
Ward 10 Coun. Landon Mohl is also one of the new faces on city council who can’t wait to start getting to work.
“I’ve been looking forward to this opportunity and I really can’t wait for Monday night,” Mohl said. “There has been lots to learn, obviously. Lots of reading, lots of studying to understand all aspects of the job.
“The senior management in the city has done a wonderful job preparing us. They have been great teachers.”
Mohl says he is excited to see the change that the council can accomplish in this upcoming term.
“I want to think that we’re going to work collaboratively together on most issues, I would imagine,” he said. “I’m excited about what we can do for the city moving forward.”
