Saskatoon Member of Parliament and former TV sportscaster Kevin Waugh knows how a change in sports gambling could mean big business for Canada.
It’s why he introduced a private members bill to allow single-game betting in Canada.
Canadians spend $14 billion on illegal single-game betting websites outside of Canada, so wouldn’t it make sense that the same money stays at home?
You should hear how much a lot of my younger colleagues and peers focus on betting lines and prop bets from the NFL, NHL, etc.
Betting in Canada is just harder to do and harder to win having to bet on four games at a time rather than just one game.
Now, the Liberal government is going to copy and paste Waugh’s recommendation into an amendment to the gambling rules.
As an added twist, what could this do for the CFL? The league is trying to engage younger fans, and younger fans like betting on sports.
Hmmmmm. Seems like a great spinoff benefit of catching up to the rest of the world on sports betting.
And of course, keeping as much of that $14 billion in Canadian hands also makes sense.
