Henry Sitter can’t grow a moustache yet, but that didn’t stop him from wanting to raise money for Movember.
The seven-year-old wanted to raise money for cancer research after his uncle, Dustin Smith, was diagnosed with cancer in December.
“I couldn’t see him for a long time and I couldn’t see my cousins for a long time that were in his family,” Sitter said. “I want to raise awareness for testicular cancer.”
Henry’s mom, Amy, said the idea came up when they were talking about cancer with him.
“He said, ‘Oh I wish we could do something,’ ” Amy said.
Henry decided he wanted to try and raise money for cancer research through the Movember campaign and set a goal of $500. He blew past that goal in a span of three hours and has now surpassed $1,100.
“I quickly posted on my Facebook and just said, ‘If you can spare a loonie or toonie to help Henry, that would be awesome,’ ” Amy said. “It’s just amazing how much people give just with what we’re going through (during the pandemic).”
Smith was also glad to see his nephew wanting to help people out.
“It’s such a nice gesture but I guess I shouldn’t have been too blown away; he’s such a nice kid,” Smith said.
Smith completed his chemotherapy treatments in March and said he’s feeling good.
“It’s been going good. I’m about eight months post-chemo and everything’s been going good. There’s the usual side-effects you hear about with chemo but it’s been going good since then. It’s been a bit of a different kind of ride but we’re getting through it,” Smith said.
And while he won’t have a moustache to shave off, Henry will still take part in the end-of-November shaves. He said if he reached his goal, Smith could shave his head.
“That’s going to be exciting. I’ve never shaved someone’s head before,” Smith said.
Henry is still accepting donations on his Movember page.
