The Regina Fire Department is warning residents to stay off frozen bodies of water like Wascana Lake and Creek, storm channels, retention ponds and recreational lakes.
Lately, there has been a trend where people have been using them as skating rinks, something that the city has discouraged.
“These bodies of water are there to reduce the risk of flooding in our neighbourhoods by collecting stormwater. Water flows in these storm channels and ponds for much of the year, including now. This moving water fluctuates in temperature and when combined with warmer weather, creates unpredictable and potentially dangerous ice conditions,” the fire department said in a news release.
While the ice may look safe, that is not necessarily the case.
“Remember, ice thickness can vary and is not an indicator of safety on these frozen surfaces,” the release said.
Instead, the fire department is urging people to use outdoor city rinks instead.
Keep dogs on a leash when close to bodies of water. If a pet breaks through the ice, do not attempt a rescue as you will be putting yourself and others in danger.
If you see anyone, particularly children, close to thin ice, call Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500. In an emergency involving people or pets, call 9-1-1.
