Evraz Place is changing how it books ice times at its giant outdoor rink at Mosaic Stadium.
“We’re booking one week at a time just so that should the (Saskatchewan Health Authority) health guidelines change, we can either scale our numbers up or we can scale them back pretty quickly,” Tim Reid, CEO of the group that runs Evraz Place, said during Monday’s Greg Morgan Morning Show.
When the first round of bookings went live last month, time slots were booked almost immediately from New Year’s Eve right until Jan. 15. The 1,700 spots for the week of Jan. 16 were made available to the public at noon Monday — and they all were booked in under 10 minutes.
The spots for the week of Jan. 25 are to be up for grabs next Monday.
The first week of skating time — Dec. 31 to Jan. 15 — was booked up in under three hours, with 13,000 in queue for it.
Public skating is free, but to track numbers, people must pre-register. Only 30 people are allowed on the massive ice surface at any one time, and individual bookings are capped at six people who can skate for a maximum of 45 minutes.
Reid also said Regina Exhibition Association Limited has had discussions about making the ice a permanent fixture at the stadium during the winter months.
“We’ve talked about it endlessly in the last couple of weeks,” he said.
That’s because he said Mosaic can be thought of as staging more than just football games.
“It just shows the versatility of the stadium,” he said.
Iceville will be open seven days a week, including on holidays, until the end of February.
