Environment Canada says a weak weather system is moving into southern Saskatchewan which could bring a nasty surprise on Thursday.
“It is going to bring some light snow and the risk of freezing rain across much of southern Saskatchewan,” meteorologist Terri Lang said Wednesday.
Lang said the risk will be in effect for the day and advised people to check the Highway Hotline for road conditions.
But even without freezing rain, she warned drivers about slippery conditions caused by thawing temperatures in the day and freezing at night.
“That can cause some really icy conditions, black ice conditions, that form in the overnight period so people should sort of keep that in mind,” she said.
“When the weather’s kind of quiet and warm, there’s a bit of a sense of complacency that sets in with respect to the weather and driving, so (that’s) just something to keep in the back of your mind.”
Mild temperatures are expected to continue for the next seven to 10 days, Lang said.
Right now, she said the seasonal daytime high would be around -11 C with overnight lows about -23 C.
