After being declared the province with the highest rate of active COVID-19 cases in Canada, Saskatchewan’s number of new infections has dropped slightly.
On Tuesday, Saskatchewan had the highest rate of active cases at 319 per 100,000 people, edging out Alberta, which had 318 per 100,000 people. The total number of active cases in Saskatchewan as of Wednesday is 3,748, down marginally from 3,752 reported on Tuesday.
That is the result of 247 new cases being reported, alongside 249 recoveries. The new cases were reported in the Saskatoon (82), north-central (27), northeast (27), northwest (24), Regina (23), far northwest (12), southeast (11), far north-central (10), far northeast (nine), central-east (eight), and central-west (one) areas. Another 13 cases have not had resident information determined yet.
Two more COVID-related deaths were also reported, both in the 80-and-over age group. One was located in the north-central zone, and another in the Saskatoon zone.
Hospitalizations increased to an all-time single-day high of 205, a jump of 14 since Tuesday. That includes 36 people in intensive care in the Saskatoon (17), Regina (10), north-central (six), northwest (two), and central-east (one) zones.
Other patients are located in Saskatoon (43), Regina (43), north-central (35), northeast (13), northwest (12), southeast (10), central-east (nine), far north-central (one), far north-east (one), central-west (one), and south-central (one) regions.
Health-care worker cases are up to 916, a 20 per cent increase since Jan. 1.
The seven-day average number of cases remains elevated, dropping only slightly to 316 from Tuesday’s record-high tally of 321.
After three days of the number of vaccines administered approaching or passing 1,000, the number of new vaccinations reported on Wednesday is down. There were 520 new vaccinations, bringing the total so far to 10,400; however, the province’s media release noted that not all vaccine reports had been received.
