People who aren’t feeling well in Weyburn are going to have to go somewhere other than the Weyburn General Hospital.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority has decided to move the hospital to care only for COVID-19-positive patients on inpatient wards.
People who don’t have the virus will be sent to hospitals in surrounding areas, like Estevan.
“Arrangements will be made for patients at the time of admission,” read a statement from the health authority.
The emergency room will still be open in Weyburn and will still be accessible to those who need it.
In the original COVID plan for the health authority, Weyburn’s hospital was set — if needed — to be designated a non-COVID hospital only.
But because there was a COVID outbreak declared at the hospital Dec. 29, the authority made this decision. In a statement, the authority said the recent increase in the number of COVID cases also influenced the decision.
As of Wednesday, there were 17 active COVID cases of patients and staff at the hospital.
