Alberta has given the OK for the Western Hockey League. Tight COVID-19 restrictions in Alberta have dropped active case counts. Hospitalizations are going down in Alberta as well.
Saskatchewan has just announced a three-week extension to its slightly less restrictive measures. Our western neighbours are starting to talk of loosening the ropes.
Can Saskatchewan agree to the same terms as Alberta, right now?
A lot would have to move extremely quickly but the WHL has convinced Alberta, with the testing strategy the league has in place and a smart schedule, that it can move ahead safely.
I read the plan. It’s very good and extremely thorough, but nothing is foolproof during COVID-19.
The other hang-up for the five Saskatchewan teams is their division will include the two Manitoba teams. Manitoba has just banned non-essential travel. Will WHL teams be given the same access as the NHL?
Despite the news being optimistic out of Alberta, it’s going to be a much harder sell the further the WHL moves east through Saskatchewan and Winnipeg to get junior hockey back.
