As COVID-19 vaccinations slow to a trickle in Saskatchewan, the province reported Monday its lowest daily number of new cases in 2021.
In a media release, the Ministry of Health said there were 147 new cases — the lowest-such figure since 147 new cases were announced Dec. 30.
There were 1,900 COVID tests processed in Saskatchewan on Sunday.
The province also announced the COVID-related deaths of two people in the 80-and-over age group from the northwest zone. Since March, 306 Saskatchewan residents have died due to COVID.
The new cases reported Monday were in the Regina (33), northwest (24), northeast (21), far northwest (14) Saskatoon (13), south-central (11), southeast (eight), central-east (seven), central-west (six), far northeast (four), north-central (three) and southwest (one) zones.
The hometowns of two cases are being investigated.
The provincial total of cases to date is 24,011. The seven-day average now stands at 228.
There were 88 COVID vaccinations in Saskatchewan on Sunday — 66 in the Saskatoon area and 22 in the far northeast zone. To date, 35,447 doses have been given.
Saskatchewan didn’t receive any shipments of vaccine last week, but shipments are to arrive in the province this week. However, they won’t be going to some of the areas that initially were to receive them.
“The bulk of doses received (in February) must be used for second dose requirements, and some communities originally slated to receive first doses will see delays,” the ministry said in its release Friday.
“Swift Current and Regina were slated to receive vaccine delivery (this week) for first dose administration to priority groups, but that will be rescheduled.”
As well, Health Minister Paul Merriman told a Parliamentary committee on Monday the province has been informed it won’t be receiving as many doses next week as it first was told.
There were 310 recoveries reported Monday, increasing that total so far to 21,336. There were 2,369 active cases in Saskatchewan on Monday, the first time that number has been under 2,400 since it was 2,145 on Nov. 20.
Of the 202 people in Saskatchewan hospitals, 30 are in intensive care units. That includes 11 in each of the Regina and Saskatoon zones, four in the central-east area, and two in each of the northwest and north-central regions.
