In two recent cases in Regina, Facebook friend requests have turned into a crime.
The Regina Police Service said Tuesday it’s investigating after two people were victims of online extortion.
According to police, the victims got a Facebook friend request from a stranger. In each case, the victim then received a private message suggesting they meet the stranger for a video chat or image-sharing on another social media platform.
“During the video chat/image sharing, the conversation turned sexual and the victim was encouraged to expose themselves on camera,” police said in a media release.
“After the online sexual encounter, the stranger then tells the victim that the image/video was being recorded and it would be shared with the victim’s friends and family and posted on social media if the victim does not pay.”
In both cases, the victims paid the stranger before reporting the incident to police.
