To kick off the Family Day long weekend the Nutrien Fireworks Festival will host an online event.
“With the pandemic the Nutrien Fireworks Festival could not happen on the September long weekend as it traditionally has been, so that event was postponed to the Family Day weekend,” Brad Dezotell, president of Fireworks Spectacular explained.
The online show starts at 5 p.m. Saturday and features live performances and two fireworks displays.
While some Saskatoon residents will be able to spot them from outside their windows, no crowds are allowed to watch on-site.
“There will be some people in the city (who) definitely can see the fireworks, I mean we’re shooting them 450 feet high,” Dezotell said.
An additional change is the freezing temperatures. Saskatoon remained under an extreme cold warning Saturday with wind chills expected to be between -35 and the -40s.
“We’re doing things nice and slow to make sure everyone is nice and safe and staying warm.” he said. “The fireworks themselves perform just fine in the cold.”
People need to pre-register to watch the show on the festival’s website.
The Traffic Bridge on Victoria Avenue will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday to accommodate the displays.
