The south-central region of Saskatchewan, including Moose Jaw, is one of only two areas of the province that still hasn’t received any COVID-19 vaccines.
According to local public health experts, this delay of Phase 1 of the province’s vaccine rollout plan is due to the lower number of active cases that our area has seen in comparison to other regions. For that reason, the limited number of vaccines available has been prioritized to areas considered to be more high-risk.
However, all that is set to change this week.
Phase 1 of the vaccine plan includes the immunization of residents in long-term care facilities and at-risk healthcare workers. As of Tuesday, at least one Moose Jaw care home has been slated to receive vaccines this week, with others also likely to be announced.
Residents and staff at the Chez Nous Senior Care Home will be able to receive the Pfizer BioN Tech COVID-19 vaccine this Saturday. Chez Nous recently overcame an outbreak of the virus among staff members and successfully broke the chain of transmission with no residents being infected.
“We’ve been waiting for this for many months,” said general manager Manon Desruisseaux. “I’m glad that the residents will all be getting vaccinated and then we can hopefully we can start letting people visit again. Our residents are getting pretty lonely.”
Desruisseaux hopes this will mean family visitations could start back up again within 4 to 6 weeks.
