A 31-year-old inmate at the Regina jail who escaped from custody Wednesday is facing a number of new charges.
According to the Regina Police Service, the incident began at about 2:15 p.m., when the police communications centre got a 911 call reporting an assault on two corrections officers and an escape on Albert Street near Dewdney Avenue.
The man, whom the Ministry of Justice said was attending a medical appointment at the time, allegedly assaulted the two male corrections officers who were accompanying him. Police say he then robbed a woman of her car.
The corrections officers were taken to hospital with what police said were “significant physical injuries.” The woman whose car was stolen wasn’t hurt.
The man drove northeast out of the city until officers were able to put down a spike belt in his path. With only one tire deflated, the man was able to continue driving north and east on grid roads until he eventually drove into a ditch.
Regina police and RCMP officers talked the man into surrendering and took him into custody at about 4:15 p.m.
He’s facing two counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer and one count each of escaping lawful custody/unlawfully at large and robbery.
