Latest COVID update April 6: 217 new cases, 221 recoveries, 3 deaths

Regina’s intensive care unit has a record number of patients with COVID-19 as more than 200 people in the province are now hospitalized fighting the virus.

There are 202 people in Saskatchewan hospitals, including 44 in intensive care.

There are 30 ICU cases in Regina, with eight in Saskatoon, four in the north-central region and two each in the south-central and central-east zones.

New cases

The ministry also reported 217 new COVID-19 cases, 221 recoveries and three deaths.

One death was reported in the north-central zone from the 60-to-69 age group. Two deaths were reported in the Regina zone from the 70-to-79 and 80-and-over age groups. To date, 443 Saskatchewan residents have died due to COVID.

The government also said there were 224 new cases of variants of concern in the province, increasing the total to date to 2,677.

A look at the numbers

The cases of variants in Saskatchewan identified by screening are in the Regina (1,898), south-central (232), southeast (214), Saskatoon (163), central-east (52), north-central (18), central-west (12), southwest (11), far northeast (four), northwest (four) and far northwest (one) zones. Residence information is pending on 68 cases.

Of the 951 variants of concerns with lineages identified by whole genome sequencing in the province, 943 are the United Kingdom variant and eight are the South African strain.

The Regina zone accounts for 803 of the total.

The new COVID cases reported Tuesday were in the Regina (97), Saskatoon (30), south-central (14), central-east (17), southeast (36), northwest (11), north-central (three), northeast (two), far northwest (five), and southwest (one) zones. The hometowns of two cases whose residence was pending have been assigned to the Regina zone.

The seven-day average of daily new cases is 226 or 18.4 per 100,000 population.

To date, Saskatchewan has recorded 34,980 cases.

The recoveries announced Tuesday increased that total so far to 32,342. There are 2,195 active cases in the province. The Regina region has 1,096 active cases.

The 2,924 tests performed in Saskatchewan on Tuesday hiked that total to date to 687,328.

Vaccination update

There were 5,938 doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered in Saskatchewan, increasing the total to date to 227,471.

A 48-hour lag is now built into the government’s vaccination data.

The latest shots were given in the Regina (2,182), Saskatoon (1,697), north-central (349), south-central (471), northwest (431), southeast (239), central-east (153), southwest (204), northeast (39), central-west (54), far northeast (11) and far northwest (five) zones. The residences are pending on 103 recipients.
