The Regina region has recorded its lowest single-day total of new COVID-19 cases in nearly two weeks.
The area had 74 of Saskatchewan’s 189 new cases announced Wednesday. That’s the lowest daily total since March 25, when 70 cases were reported in the region.
Two more Saskatchewan residents have died due to COVID — a person in their 30s from the north-central zone and a person in the 80-and-over age group from the Regina area. The death toll now stands at 445.
A look at the numbers
The new cases reported Wednesday increased the provincial total to date to 35,171.
In addition to the total from the Regina zone, there were new cases reported in the Saskatoon (43), southeast (23), south-central (15), central-east (12), northwest (nine), far northwest (four), north-central (three) and southwest (three) zones.
The hometowns of three cases are pending. Two Saskatchewan residents who tested positive in other provinces have been added to the far northeast zone’s total.
The seven-day average of daily new cases is 226, or 18.4 per 100,000 population.
There were 153 new cases of variants of concern identified through screening in Saskatchewan, increasing that total to 2,830. Regina’s total increased by 88 to 1,986, far and away the highest in the province.
There were 246 recoveries reported Wednesday, increasing that total so far to 32,588. The active caseload stands at 2,138, with 1,040 of those in the Regina region.
There are 159 people receiving inpatient care in Saskatchewan hospitals and 42 in intensive care. The ICU cases are in the Regina (27), Saskatoon (six), north-central (four), south-central (three) and central-east (two) regions.
The 3,122 tests processed in the province on Tuesday hiked that total so far to 690,450.
Vaccination update
There were 6,738 new COVID vaccinations reported Wednesday, increasing the total so far to 234,209.
The latest shots were given in the Saskatoon (2,322), Regina (1,758), northwest (665), north-central (651), central-east (562), southeast (166), southwest (140), south-central (117), central-west (68), northeast (57), far northeast (47), far northwest (26) and far north-central (one) zones.
There were 158 doses administered with zone of residence pending.
