A more complete story about Canada’s first prime minister and his legacy in Regina will be developed through contributions from residents.
That’s the intent of a new public consultation process being launched by the City of Regina. Residents are invited to share stories of Sir John A. Macdonald’s impact on them and their families at beheard.regina.ca. It is also a place for Regina residents to learn from others.
Collecting these stories allows for a fuller story that includes Macdonald’s contributions to Canada as prime minister and father of Confederation as well as the impact of his government’s policies on Indigenous peoples and other ethno-cultural communities, according to a City of Regina news release.
Regina’s city council voted March 31 in favour of putting the statue of Macdonald in Victoria Park into storage until a new home for it can be found. At that time, city administration came forward with the recommendation for a public consultation process to take place as to the next steps.
Preparations are underway to move the statue from Victoria Park and it could be put into storage some time in April. The city says it will be moved according to “civic art collections standards” and a public art collection curator will be on site to ensure the statue is moved appropriately.
A new location for the statue is not expected to be revealed until early in 2022 when a follow-up report is delivered to city council.
