A person in their 40s has died after being diagnosed with COVID-19, according to the latest numbers from Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Health.
The southeast-area individual was one of two people who died with the virus since yesterday. The other was a person in the 60-to-69 age group from the northwest zone.
The ministry also reported there were 221 new COVID cases in the province, along with 143 newly identified cases of COVID variants of concern. There also were 225 recoveries.
A look at the numbers
The 190 hospitalizations include 146 people receiving inpatient care, with 66 of those in the Regina region and 39 in the Saskatoon area.
There are 44 people in intensive care, with 30 in the Regina zone, nine in the Saskatoon area, two in south-central and one each in the central-east, north-central and southwest areas.
The new cases reported Friday were in the Regina (57), Saskatoon (25), southeast (25), south-central (25), northwest (21), southwest (18), central-east (11), north-central (eight), far northeast (five), far northwest (five), northeast (four) and central-west (one) zones.
The hometowns of 16 cases are still being determined.
The total number of cases to date now stands at 37,615.
So far, 4,326 cases of variants of concern have been identified by screening in the province.
The Regina region has recorded 2,731 of those, with the southeast (419), Saskatoon (385) and south-central (349) zones also reporting more than 300 cases.
There were 58 new variant cases reported in the Regina region on Friday, with Saskatoon’s total increasing by 13.
So far, 34,550 recoveries have been reported in the province. As of Friday, 2,603 cases are considered active, with 914 of those in the Regina region and 511 in the Saskatoon area.
The seven-day average of daily new cases is 264, or 21.6 per 100,000 population.
The 3,739 COVID-19 tests done in Saskatchewan on Thursday increased the total so far to 721,225.
Vaccination update
There were 8,168 more doses of COVID-19 vaccine given in Saskatchewan, bringing the provincial total to date to 323,573.
Shots were given in the Regina (2,468), Saskatoon (2,532), central-east (740), northwest (452), southeast (437), south-central (529), north-central (463), far northwest (11), central-west (78), far northeast (134), southwest (65), northeast (60) and far north-central (one) zones.
There were 198 doses administered to people whose zone of residence is pending.
