The Regina Police Service has a need for SPEED.
On Monday, the police said its annual spring traffic initiative, Project SPEED (Spring Public Education and Enforcement Drive), is set to kick off. From now through May, officers will be on the lookout for speeding, stunting and street racing on Regina roads.
“After a long winter, people are anxious and excited for spring. We understand that. We are too,” Sgt. Mark Verbeek of the RPS Traffic Safety Unit said in a media release.
“Spring brings better driving conditions, more daylight and a sense of energy to everyone. However, that often results in vehicles travelling at higher speeds, street racing and excess vehicle noise in our community. We are committed to reducing those driving behaviours in hopes of increasing public safety.”
In 2020, the month-long spotlight resulted in 1,517 tickets being issued for various traffic offences including speeding (1,183 tickets), vehicle equipment violations (46), distracted driving (26), suspended drivers (17) and other driving offences (245).
Police also impounded 27 vehicles and handed out 45 vehicle inspection tickets.
