The Regina Police Service’s explosives disposal unit destroyed a suspicious package that was found Monday behind a business on Victoria Avenue near Winnipeg Street.
In a statement late Monday afternoon, police spokesperson Elizabeth Popowich said police don’t believe there was any malicious intent on the part of whoever left the item, so there isn’t any “criminal consequence for whoever left it there.”
“The best way to describe the container is to say it was an opaque container, so it was not possible to see its contents until we destroyed it,” Popowich said in the release. “The contents are best described as regular household items.
“In and of themselves, they pose no hazard, but the circumstances led us to approach this object with extreme caution until we knew more.”
According to police, a call came in at about 10 a.m., about a suspicious object right behind the business.
Police evacuated people from nearby businesses and contacted people who live in the area, asking them to stay inside until the investigation was complete.
At about 1:30 p.m., police destroyed the object and reopened the area to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
In a media release, police said the bomb squad “will continue to determine exactly what the package contained and how it came to be in that location.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
