The Never Blame the Victim campaign by Regina’s YWCA wants more people to recognize that those who have been sexually assaulted are not responsible for what happened to them.
Sexual Assault Awareness Week in Saskatchewan began Monday and concludes Friday.
The Regina YWCA partnered with local businesses who will put a campaign sticker on their takeout orders and shopping bags. The sticker points to a website that helps people recognize the prevalence of sexual assault and the supports available to those reporting being assaulted.
Those local businesses participating are:
- The Bannock House
- Moose and Bannock
- Mortise and Tenon
- The Broom Closet
- Rebellion Brewing Co.
- Malty National
- Fresh and Sweet
- O’Hanlon’s Irish Pub
- Takeaway Gourmet
- Vintage Vinyl
- Everyday Kitchen
- Waterfront Beach Bar and Grill
- Lumsden Hotel and Steak Pit
Each year, hundreds of reports of sexual assault are made to the Regina Police Service. In 2020, Regina Police Service statistics show that were 258 reports of sexual assault made to officers.
But many people don’t come forward to report to police they were sexually assaulted, instead choosing to disclose it to someone else. The YWCA campaign website says 91 per cent of assaults are not reported to police.
Far too often, the person assaulted feels responsible for what happened because of messages they’ve received in the community. The YWCA website explains that questions about a victim’s clothing or alcohol use add to the burden carried by those who are sexually assaulted and are a part of the community mentality that needs to change.
