Change is coming to pass at the Winnipeg Street North overpass.
The City of Regina said Thursday the long-awaited two-year construction project on the overpass is set to begin.
A new overpass is to be built to the west of the current structure and the interchange and roads in the area will be modified to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
The project does not include the removal of the railway tracks crossing Ring Road at Winnipeg Street.
“These are two distinctly separate pieces of work with very different scopes, objectives and timeframes,” the city said in a media release. “The city is pursuing removal of the railway crossings though a proposed relocation per council’s approval back in August 2019.
“This project (on Winnipeg Street) does not impact work relating to advancing the rail relocation work.”
According to the city, traffic on Ring Road and Winnipeg Street will be affected during the overpass project mainly through lane width and speed restrictions. The work is expected to result in short-term, overnight or weekend road closures.
The project is to cost $28.8 million, with equal funding from the federal, provincial and municipal governments.
“This major project to rebuild the overpass and realign Winnipeg Street North will provide a safer and efficient roadway, supporting the future growth of residential, commercial and industrial developments in the area,” Mayor Sandra Masters said in the media release.
“Through this collaborative investment, we are helping to encouraging economic activity and I thank the federal and provincial governments for funding this work.”
The project also will include new traffic signals, street lighting, widened roadways, extra turning lanes, modifications to utilities and improved drainage with the creation of three storm ponds. As well, a multi-use pathway will be installed between Seventh Avenue and Mount Pleasant.
The city said about 50,000 vehicles per day travel on Ring Road in the area, while between 15,000 and 18,000 vehicles use Winnipeg Street every day.
